St. Mary's History

Founded in 1878, St. Mary’s Catholic School has been a beacon of faith-based education for over a century. As the only Catholic parochial elementary school continuously operating for over 145 years in the Diocese of Memphis, St. Mary’s proudly holds the distinction of being the oldest parochial school in Tennessee.

Since 1900, the school has been under the dedicated administration of the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia Congregation, based in Nashville. The Dominican Sisters, renowned for their commitment to education and spiritual formation, have played an integral role in shaping the school's ethos. Established in 1860, the St. Cecilia Congregation focuses on the four Dominican pillars: prayer, study, community, and service. These sisters bring a rich heritage of academic excellence and a deep spiritual life, fostering an environment where faith and learning flourish hand in hand.

St. Mary’s Catholic School is owned and operated by St. Mary’s Parish and thrives through the support of parents, parishioners, and the broader community. Our mission is to prepare today’s children for success tomorrow in a nurturing environment that emphasizes both intellectual growth and spiritual development.

At St. Mary’s, quality teachers and a robust curriculum make a significant difference. Our students forge lasting friendships, and the balance between praying and playing is a cornerstone of our approach. Known for its traditional yet unique programs, St. Mary’s encourages the highest degree of academic excellence and spiritual formation. Education here is inspired by a supernatural vision that forms the whole child—spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, and physically.

Authentically Catholic in the Dominican tradition, our mission is founded on a Christian anthropology that fosters a love for wisdom and truth. Through solid moral formation and a classical approach to learning, St. Mary’s provides a well-rounded experience, preparing children comprehensively for the future.
